Officially, the ‘x’ in TEDx stands for independently organized TED event Talks, people, playlists, topics, and events about "difference" on TED.com TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDx [name], where x = independently organized TED event. At our TEDx [name] event, TEDTalks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. The theme for TEDxDunedin 2017 is “Making a Difference”.

What is TED? TED is a nonprofit devoted to ideas worth spreading, usually in the form of short, powerful talks (18 minutes or less). The key difference between TED and TEDx events is that while the main TED events are organized by TED Foundation and happen only a handful of times each year, TEDx was launched to enable people to operate and organize independent events under the TED brand. TED events are organised by the TED organisation themselves while TEDx events can be organised by anyone for their community after gaining a license from TED, hence "independently organised". TED provides a support system and very specific guidelines which need to be followed by the organisers.
